ROCKING WITH NORTH ROCKY
Thursday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. EST (on Zoom)
Catherine Burke promises to take us into North Rocky life and down memory lane on the north side of the street. What made it a special dorm? Do you have memories to share? If you lived there or just visited, join us to remember and reconnect with food, friends and sitting bells. And if you have pictures, please send so we can share!
THE 2025 COMMON READ: “Parable of the Sower” Octavia Butler
Thursday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. EST (on Zoom)
This year, Mount Holyoke selected “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia E. Butler for its Common Read. A seminal dystopian science fiction novel, published in 1993, it tells the story of a visionary teenage girl who flees her Los Angeles–area enclave with a group of followers amid social and environmental collapse. The New York Times named it a Notable Book of the Year in 1994 for its prescient treatment of racial justice, climate collapse and fascism. Beryl Schwartz Steinbach ’78 will lead us in a discussion of this timely book.
THE MHC BOTANIC GARDEN: PLANTS FOR TODAY’S WORLD
Thursday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. EST (on Zoom)
Do you remember getting your first dorm plant the first week of college? It’s still happening today! In 2028, the Botanic Garden celebrates 150 years at MHC. Join a master gardener and horticulturist, Tom Clark, director of the Botanic Garden, to delve into the past and present of the plants, historic Talcott Greenhouse and plans for the three acres of gardens at MHC. The Botanic Garden’s diverse and dynamic living collection includes more than 2,000 different types of plants from six continents distributed throughout the greenhouses and outdoor gardens. So bring your plant questions too!
NOTE: Zoom links will be sent to you one to six days before the programs. No need to register. If you miss a program, a recording will be posted on our class Facebook page and a link will be on our class website, www.mhc78.org.
